Advice:
One Way to Know the Worth of a College - Page 167 "Talk to ten students who are going to a college you are interested in, and are also taking the classes you are interested in, under the professors you are interested in. The majority of them should love it there, feeling the excitement of the hunt in their studies, and (within moral bounds) being willing to do what it takes. If they are just paying their dues and feel like they are memorizing useless information, you are in the wrong place. If there is widespread cheating, you are in the wrong place. Ditto for booze, etc."
The Value of Inspiration - Page 183"Do not discount inspiration. If you have a sincere desire to learn and accomplish great things and put your self in the right frame of mind, you can receive inspiration. So be sure to pray and ask for help in your studies. Of everything in the Magical Procession, this is the most overlooked part of it and yet it is best way to gain greater knowledge. And no one can nail you for cheating if it is God that helped you."
What Schools and Colleges Don't Tell You, But I Will - Page 237"For instance, if money is saved in the student's name instead of the parents' name, you are greatly penalized, but they probably won't mention that.
For instance, if your family situation is that dad is self-employed and mom helps dad in the business (all the while running the household) and mom doesn't draw an income directly from the business, payable to her name, then your family gets punished for being a one wage earner family and you qualify for less aid— but they won't tell you that.
There are obviously solutions to those problems, but they won't tell you that. So just remember that be wary applies to them as well."
Little Things Can Make a Big Difference in the Aid You Receive - Page 241 "Isn't that incredible? Just by changing any one of the three factors to one point better gets $20,000 more dollars of free money spread out over the four years for that college. Would that be worth a little extra effort? If you knew you were that close, and that with just a bit more effort you could get $20,000 more for college, you'd obviously be crazy not to make to the effort."
An Excellent Financial Aid Tool - Page 247"On that chart a few pages back, you may have noticed a very important line. It showed which colleges are more likely to meet a family's financial need at a higher percent, and with less loans and more free money. That is a great tool."
How to Know If a Letter of Recommendation Was Completed - Page 310
"You may want to provide your Letter Of Recommendation (LOR) source with stamped and addressed envelopes ready to be sent to the college(s). To go along with this, include inside the preaddressed and stamped envelopes you give to your LOR source, a stamped postcard addressed to you that in the message part has the name of the source, and the college's name, and that the LOR has been received.
For example it could be prewritten to say, 'LOR from Nancy Wiggenbottom for (insert your name here) has been received by Brains-R-Us University.' Since it's already filled out and has a stamp, all the college has to do is drop it in the mail to you, and upon receiving it, you'll know that the LOR was done. That way if it is a week or so after you have applied and you haven't received confirmation, you could gently ask your LOR source if the letter has been sent yet. I highly recommend this—you must verify everything that depends on the actions of others."
Humor:
From a Discussion About Using Visualization- Page 83
"Albert Einstein—the guy whose brain and hair were ahead of their time."
About Having Vision and Starting to Live it Now - Page 54 "It's obvious to talent scouts that the athletes they are looking at are just that—athletes. They see them being an athlete; they smell them being an athlete! If journalism is your thing, make it 'stinking' obvious that you are a journalist."
About Seeing the Big Picture (In Driving and Education) - Page 69
"My cousin had a unique way of driving. If she bumped into something
on the left, she knew it was time to steer to the right. If she backed into
something, well, then it was time to go forward. Life was that simple for her.
Even though that seemed to work for her, in my opinion, the way I was
taught is better."
Intellectual Bullying - Page 103"How many students are prevented from achieving great things because
too much time is spent intellectually beating them up on something they
aren’t good at? This is shortsighted, myopic, and any other redundancy that
may apply."
The Need for Meaningful and Challenging Content - Page 145 "If she studies from original works, instead of someone teaching her bits and pieces of what the horse did or said, she gets the whole story, straight from the horse's mouth. So what if some of the horses had bad breath, it's still a better education."
Socialism Personified? - Page 127 "Parents, if socialism had an anglicized Native American name, it would be 'Squatting Atheistic Hippo With Large Gun.' It's time we all understand its true nature, quit smoking the peace pipe with it, and kick it out of our teepees and villages, and out of the minds of our youth."
Serious Stuff
How Many Colleges Are Spritual Wastelands? - Page 32"A Templeton Foundation survey found that many college students lose their religious faith by the time they are a junior. Why? Are they finding higher truths? Not really. They are spending a crucial part of their life at a spiritual wasteland.
Self-evident No Longer - Page 111"The truths that Jefferson and the signers of the Declaration of Independence affirmed to be self-evident have been suppressed and are self-evident no longer."
Whose Values Will the Students Learn? - Page 119 "There is no question that students will be taught values in college, the only question is what kind of values?"
On Why Original Works and Primary Sources Are Better - Page 145"Textbooks may have interesting information in them, but they usually don't open the mind, intrigue the curiosity, or touch the heart."
One Reason Brains Aren't Excelling As Well As They Could Be - Page 105"Meanwhile the bureaucrats' and union's effort is to take parents' and teachers' focus off of the direction that the government's educational policies lead to, which ultimately is intellectual and moral hell, and instead try to get them to be excited and grateful for what a nice hand basket they have provided for the journey."
A Superior Education Allows Knowledge to Be Experienced Firsthand - Page 153 "...are you ready for his reply? Here it is, 'Oh we're not actually reading the Federalist Papers, the professor just tells us about them.' The professor just tells the students about the Federalist Papers? Well sink me if that isn't really higher education at all! It's not even the best lower education."
The Second Greatest Story on Earth Should be Learned in Depth - Page 148 "...despite the wrongs committed to various peoples throughout its history, this country was brought forth, as Abraham Lincoln said, 'Conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.' The story of what that really means, and the struggle to achieve it for all is, in my opinion the Second Greatest Story On Earth, with that of our Savior being the only thing to eclipse it; and so you can't get much more meaningful than that. It's really the story of man.
That means that while things like the learning of Japanese tea ceremony, African tribal customs, Norwegian folk music, and Aztecan rites have their place, if they replace the in-depth learning of the Second Greatest Story On Earth, it is a grave mistake."
The Aim of Socialism - Page 126 "Socialism, by its inherent nature aims at weakening all of our affiliations and believes it is the one true source. Socialism aims to have man dependent not upon himself, but on the state. To have man not be dependent upon his employer, but upon the state. And once again, not upon his neighbor or his family, but upon the state. And ultimately, to be dependent not upon God, but upon the state. A person's whole life becomes consolidated, concentrated, and dependent on one source—the government."
A Call to Action - Page 127 "I call on all those who believe in God to stop supporting institutions that believe in replacing religious beliefs with secular falsehoods. Don't go to colleges that teach socialism. Don't go to ones that have party cultures of booze, drugs, and sex. Don't put up any longer with lousy textbooks on history, science, and humanities, etc. that have half-truths and phony factoids. You deserve much better for your money. Students' brains deserve better, and our society deserves better. It's time to stop letting a handful of people dictate new abnormal norms for all of society. It just doesn't make sense to keep putting up with this stuff."
